Long Wood Fever

"God damn bro, what the hell was that?"

Red was pissed. I was too. I can't believe I missed a clean shot of the buck. We were out for four hours and I had a clean shot.

"Shit man, I don't know what happened. My bad bud," I said, trying to get him off my back.

It could have been the four beers I drank before we left the house.

"Well just know that I'm not going to let your ass forget you missed a wide open shot," Red said, throwing a punch at my shoulder.

It was late so we headed back to the house. Our buddy Hank had given us full run of the country house. He wasn't able to make it so Red and I decided to come anyway to get away from the same-o-same-o. We both worked over at the plant farm. I was Red's helper and he drove the plant truck. Our truck route was a funky one. All the way up to North Carolina, then down to Nashville, and back down to Birmingham with a few stops here and there in small towns.

We were away from home quite a bit. Red's wife Ann wasn't adjusting to his schedule. She didn't like for him to be away so much, but that was the life of a plant farm trucker.

Red, Hank and I grew up together and were attached like glue all the way through high school. Red barely made it out, but the son-of-a-bitch grazed through by the skin of his teeth.

He was what you called a late bloomer. He mostly got by on his rugged good looks. Rumor was he actually banged one of the teachers and she in turn gave him the 'A' to get his walking papers. I'm sure it was an oral test that got him that passing grade.

The walk back to the house was a long and cold one. We left a big back stick to keep the fire going while we were out so at least we could walk back into a somewhat warm environment. This winter was pretty harsh compared to last year's. The temp had dropped to ball freezing lows.

Red chucked his gear down and found a nearby tree. "Hold up, I gotta piss."

"That's the second time in the past twenty minutes we've had to stop. What are you, ten?"

"Can't help that the lizard needs draining, horse."

"Shit man it's freezing. Hurry up! If you shake it more than twice, you're playing with it."

"That's not what your wife said," Red shouted as he zipped up. We sprinted the rest of the way back to the house.
